For example: avoid obvious potential hazards such as glass-topped tables, and furniture with sharp corners. Sofas with removable covers will be invaluable when it comes to inevitable spills and smudges. Added storage will also come in handy when it comes time to tidy up! In general, a kid-friendly space should prioritise practicality, versatility and comfort.

Go bold or go home! Nothing transforms a room like a lick of paint, especially in a standout colour. However, don’t go down this route out of a pure desire to be “on trend”. Advise clients to focus on choosing colours they simply love, and suit the space, as these will stand the test of time. Nobody wants to be repainting every year or two!

Always make a point to use natural light to the best of your ability. Place areas of most use (ie. dining or living areas) in the spaces that get the most light. Avoid crowding items into a space as this can make it feel smaller and darker. Better to choose a few high quality items and give them room to breathe.

The best designers are those who can find compromise between their artistic vision and the practical needs of their client. For example: an expensive white leather sofa would be a very poor choice for a client with kids and a dog, no matter how well it fits in the colour scheme! Something durable and easy to clean might be a better option for a family.

Familiar with the saying 'it's all smoke and mirrors'? There is real substance to this comment (well maybe leave the smoke out). Strategically placed decorative mirrors can make a small space feel larger. Placing mirrors directly opposite windows will add an instant brightness in any space that with limited lighting.
